VIKING SUMMER RAID 2016- Powerlifting…Strongman…MAS Wrestling…or ALL OF THEM, for one GLORIOUS WEEKEND!
Powerlifting- unsanctioned, Strongman- Strongman Corp (formerly NAS) Level I, MAS Wrestling- Strongman Corp (NAS) or MAS member.
Powerlifting: Saturday, August 20th @ 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.
Strongman: Sunday, August 21st @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

“He who lives without discipline, dies without honor.” – Icelandic proverb
The first Viking Summer Raid was born just a few weeks after Viking Performance Training opened its doors, and the strongman challenge was engaged.
In the second year a second day was added- Day 1 became a Powerlifting contest, unsanctioned as a test of raw strength against the iron in squat, bench press, and deadlift. Day 2 the Strongman contest returned, a Strongman Corp Level I testing strength in its raw form.
Now for Year 3, the evolution returns to its Viking roots, begun over 1,200 years ago… Day 1 will again see the powerlifting contest shake the very earth. Day 2 the Strongman contest- stones will be lifted, iron thrown overhead… and also an addition from the days of ocean raiding adventure. MAS Wrestling, a sport founded in tests to find the best rowers for a hard voyage on the seas.
Compete in one contest or the other- strive for all-time bests in weight moved, PRs in strongman, or contest placings among your class.
Compete in both contests, two grueling days of maximal effort in barely more than 24 hours’ time… and you challenge yourself, testing resolve, grit, and prove to yourself that you have what it takes not just to finish, but to conquer, and LEAD, the Raids!
Eligibility: Any male or female age 13 years or older.

Event Rules (listed in order of contest)
Powerlifting Raid (unsanctioned)
There will be 3 attempts each lift; attempts may not be lower than the previous attempt.
Athletes will maintain the same flight order by weight class through all lifts and attempts.
The following equipment will be used- Texas Squat Bar for Squat, Texas Power Bar for Bench Press, Texas Deadlift Bar for Deadlifts. Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift will all compete using iron plates and may be contested in increments as low as 2.5lb (we have 1 1/4 lb plates).
Squat- Lifter will communicate to head judge, after walking the barbell out, they are ready to begin. Judge will give “squat” command. Lifter squats to or below parallel and stands back up, without moving the feet. Judge will call “rack” command after lifter is motionless.
Bench Press- Lifter will approach bench when given the command get ready, then unrack the barbell with or without a spotter. Once spotter has removed contact and bar is motionless, judge will give “Lift” command and bar will be lowered to chest. Bar must be motionless on chest before judge gives “Press” command and lifter presses weight up. Once bar is motionless at arms’ length, judge will give the “Rack” command.
Deadlift- Once judge gives “Lift” command, lifter may approach the bar and deadlift with any foot placement. Lifter may not hitch and bar may not have downward movement. At full extension the lifter and bar must become motionless, and then judge will give the “Down” command. The lifter MUST maintain control of the bar on the way down.
Equipment
Singlets are NOT required. Lift in whatever you’re comfortable in, so long as it’s not offensively minded! Shirts are required for all lifts, shoes are required for all lifts EXCEPT deadlifts (socks only are allowable). Calf length socks MUST be worn for deadlifts.
Weightlifting belts, wrist wraps, knee sleeves are allowed. No lifting straps or knee wraps (note this is to minimize gear which may directly increase the force output since it is an unsanctioned contest- raw strength rules this weekend!).
General Rules- Powerlifting
Event Rules
Strongman Raid (Strongman Corporation Level I)- listed in order of competition
Ascending Weight Car Deadlift- I know what you’re thinking. A car? Vikings didn’t have cars. Well if THEY DID, or if we had a longship, they would be getting lifted! This event is for max reps in 60 seconds. The fun part- each successful rep weight will be added to the vehicle as quick as possible! This could be weight plates, kegs, sandbags, lost children…possibilities are endless as long as you keep lifting the apparatus! Competitors must wait for a ‘LIFT’ command before lifting the apparatus. Hips and legs must be locked out before a ‘DOWN’ command will be given. Equipment allowed: lifting straps, belt, chalk, knee and elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, an iron will. NOT allowed: tacky, deadlift suits.
Max Weight Axle Clean and Press– Who will be worthy enough to be the last one standing and lifting the mighty axle? Last man and woman standing! You may enter at any weight or skip any weight. If you miss a lift, you are done with the event. There will be a minimum opening weight, weights will go up 10 pounds each lift for ladies and teens and 20 pounds each lift for males. Any weight can be skipped by any athlete, but if an attempt is missed the lifter will be credited with the last successful lift, NOT the last weight passed. Athlete must completely lock out the implement and WAIT FOR THE DOWN SIGNAL. Ladies and teens will use a 2-inch fat bar (25lb empty), males a 2 5/16″ giant axle of doom (90lb empty). You will have a 30 second time limit per attempt. Continental cleans ARE allowed, as long as the bar does not rest for longer than 3 seconds on the belt. Equipment allowed: Belt, chalk, knee sleeves, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, gripshirts. Equipment NOT allowed: lifting straps, tacky, elbow wraps, slingshots, Go-Go Gadget Arms.
Carry Over Bar Medley- Each competitor will have 4 objects to pick up from the ground, carry varying distances, and load over a bar. Competitors will have 90 seconds to complete the medley; distance will be credited for incomplete medleys. Females and 13-15yo teens will load over 46”, 16-17yo teens and LW’s will load over 50”, MW’s and HW’s will load over 52”.
MAS Wrestling- The original Viking sport! Best described in its simplest form as Seated Tug of War with a stick, a MAS Wrestling tournament will be held among the weight classes. This will be part of a separate MAS Wrestling tournament, increasing the possible number of matches! All matches are 2 out of 3, and tournament style will be double-elimination or round robin, depending on the number of competitors. For a full description of the rules, including links to sample videos, click here http://maswrestlingusa.com/mas-wrestling/abridged-mas-wrestling-usa-rules .
Stones of the North (Stone Loading + Stone Press)- A stone contest of grueling proportions only those possessed with the hardiness of the North will complete it! Competitors begin by loading 3-4 progressively heavier stones to a 48″ platform (13-15yo teens and females will load the 4th stone to a 36” drum). To finish, competitors must lift a random object (see chart) from ground to overhead, and RECEIVE THE DOWN SIGNAL. 90-second time limit. Equipment allowed: Belt, knee wraps, chalk, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, tacky (except some weight classes; see chart), grip shirts. Equipment not allowed: stepping boxes to load stones, telekinesis.
