The hit contest, Test of the Einherjar, returns to Viking Performance Training for its 5th edition… and this time… it spans TWO DAYS!

The most daunting of challenges populates day 1 – the Super Total meet!

Then the fabled challenges of Strongman Sport shall face us on Day 2!

Bigger… better… the Einherjar are hungry to prove themselves as Odin calls upon his warriors at the ultimate time of need!

This will be a full SUPERTOTAL meet on Day 1!  The supertotal will consist of the two Olympic Weightlifting events, the snatch and the clean and jerk.  These will not be sanctioned, but will be judged near sanctioned standards and using top-of-the-line equipment.  Immediately following will be a non-sanctioned Powerlifting meet consisting of squat, bench press, and deadlift.

Competition in either only the Olympic Weightlifting or Powerlifting portions is allowed, but for the full Test of the Einherjar, the Supertotal must be completed!

The Einherjar were the chosen warriors of Odin, the valiant dead taken to his hall to train during the day to death…be reborn…and feast at night, until the end of the world!  Do you have what it takes???

Then, on Day 2, we walk into the frozen wilderness for the Test of the Einherjar Strongman by Strongman Corporation. A gauntlet of unique events that challenge every muscle in your body, in this life and the next!

***Strongman Corporation membership is required for Day 2***

Event Rules (listed in order of contest*)

* Multiple flights may be held at same time, which may cause a different order of lifts for some classes; this will only occur if there is a very large number of lifters

Order will be Snatch, Clean & Jerk, Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift.

There will be 3 attempts each lift; attempts may not be lower than the previous attempt.

Weightlifting and Powerlifting flights will be used for each half of the contest, respectively!  This means that during the Snatch and Clean & Jerk portion of the event, attempts will be progressed based on amount of weight lifted, so YOU MAY FOLLOW YOURSELF.  A 2:00 break is allowed if a lifter has 2 attempts in a row.  For powerlifting portion, athletes will maintain the same flight order by weight class through all lifts and attempts.

The following equipment will be used:

  • Snatch, Clean & Jerk- Men will use a 20kg Uesaka competition bar, Women will use a 15kg Eleiko training bar. Uesaka plates.
  • Squat- Texas Squat Bar
  • Bench Press- Rogue Power Bar
  • Deadlift- Texas Deadlift Bar

Snatch and Clean & Jerks may be contested in increments as low as 1.0kg.  Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift may be contested in increments as low as 2.5lb (we have 1 1/4 lb plates).

Snatch- The lifter will take the bar from ground to overhead in one single motion; arms must be locked and feet in parallel stance with straight legs, showing control of lift before the lift is complete.  No part of the lifter other than the feet may touch the ground.  Once bar begins upward movement there may not be any stopping of barbell’s upward motion.  Pressing the barbell overhead will be dismissal of the lift.  Contact of the bar with the head will cause a bad lift.  When lowering the bar, the bar must be lowered under control at least to the minimum of the shoulders (hands stay in contact with bar).  Dropping the bar from above the shoulders will result in an incorrect lift.

Clean & Jerk- The lifter will take the bar from ground to shoulder/chest in one single motion.  Bar will then be jerked or pressed overhead in one single motion.  This is one of the ONLY DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN TEST OF THE EINHERJAR AND SANCTIONED WEIGHTLIFTING- A Press IS allowed (if it’s good enough for Paul Anderson, a former USA Weightlifting Gold medalist and strength icon, it’s good enough for us!).  No part of the lifter other than the feet may touch the ground.  Once bar begins upward movement there may not be any stopping of bar’s upward motion.  The barbell must not touch the chest until it’s final motion on the clean.  During the clean the elbows or upper arms may not touch the thighs.  Only one jerk effort per clean is allowed.  The athlete MUST be motionless before starting the jerk.

Squat- Lifter will communicate to head judge, after walking the barbell out, that they are ready to begin.  Judge will give “squat” command.  Lifter squats to or below parallel and stands back up, without moving the feet.  Judge will call “rack” command after lifter is motionless.

Bench Press- Lifter will approach bench when given the command get ready, then unrack the barbell with or without a spotter.  Once spotter has removed contact and bar is motionless, judge will give “Lift” command and bar will be lowered to chest.  Bar must be motionless on chest before judge gives “Press” command and lifter presses weight up.  Once bar is motionless at arms’ length, judge will give the “Rack” command.

Deadlift- Once judge gives “Lift” command, lifter may approach the bar and deadlift with any foot placement.  Lifter may not hitch and bar may not have downward movement.  At full extension the lifter and bar must become motionless, and then judge will give the “Down” command.  The lifter MUST maintain control of the bar on the way down.

Equipment

Singlets are NOT required.  Lift in whatever you’re comfortable in, so long as it’s not offensively minded!  Shirts are required for all lifts, shoes are required for all lifts EXCEPT deadlifts (socks only is fine).  Calf length socks MUST be worn for deadlifts.

Weightlifting belts, wrist wraps, neoprene elbow and knee sleeves are allowed.  No suits, lifting straps, knee wraps, or ply sleeves (note this is to minimize gear which may directly increase the force output).

General Rules

  • Supertotal Best Lifter awards will be decided using the Wilks Formula; for the Powerlifting and Weightlifting Best Lifter awards the Wilks and Sinclair formulas will be used, respectively.  In the event of a tie, we have swords and axes and will melee for the prize…or maybe MAS wrestle.
  • Sportsmanship is expected and required.  Strength sports are the greatest sports in the world, let’s keep it that way.
  • If you have a question, please ask! I would rather take a minute to clarify something than to see someone have a poor showing due to a misunderstanding

Max Keg to Shoulder

  • WV State Records on the line
  • 60sec to complete a lift. Three attempts to lift the heaviest keg possible. Heaviest lift wins
  • When you miss, you’re out. You may skip any increments you choose.
  • In the event of a tie, “less attempts” wins. If that doesn’t work, “higher opener” wins. If that doesn’t work, “highest second attempt” wins. If that doesn’t work, you just tie and split the points
  • Must wait for down command. To receive down command, feet must motionless, non-staggered, and within shoulder width. Knees and hips must be extended, with upright posture (lateral lean is allowed to get keg over midline). Keg must be rested on shoulder, roughly parallel to the ground, with the top facing directly forward or backward. Opposite hand must then be clearly removed from keg to demonstrate control.
  • Mix of normal kegs and Bartos Power Kegs will be used. Our normal kegs go to at least 315.
  • Wrist wraps, chalk, sleeves (minus fastening/buckling mechanisms), gloves and a single belt are allowed
  • Specifically disallowed: sticky substances of any kind including but not limited to tacky, spray tack, tacky towels, Loctite, etc. Yes people actually glue themselves to stuff nowadays so it had to be said. No rubberized clothing beyond gloves.

Max Double Dumbbell Press

  • WV State Records on the line
  • 60sec to complete a lift. Three attempts to lift the heaviest keg possible. Heaviest lift wins
  • When you miss, you’re out. You may skip any increments you choose.
  • In the event of a tie, “less attempts” wins. If that doesn’t work, “higher opener” wins. If that doesn’t work, “highest second attempt” wins. If that doesn’t work, you just tie and split the points
  • Must wait for down command. To receive down command, feet must motionless, non-staggered, and within shoulder width. Knees, hips, and elbows must be extended, with upright posture. Bells must be motionless overhead.
  • Do not drop the bells from overhead. This will result in a “no lift”. Lower to shoulders, then down under control. It’s not that hard to set them down under some semblance of control, I pinky promise. If your super special technique supposedly prevents you from doing so, then find a new technique before game day ?
  • Wrist wraps, chalk, sleeves (minus fastening/buckling mechanisms), gloves and a single belt are allowed

Revolving Handle Farmers Walk

  • WV State Records on the line
  • Max Distance in 60sec with no drops. Furthest distance wins
  • LW women of the Novice, Masters, and Teen category have traditional NON-revolving handles.
  • Turns will be made at 50ft around a small tire
  • Hands must remain inside markings on handles as to prevent contact with non-revolving parts
  • Hook grip is not allowed for this challenge.
  • Powder/block chalk only. Hands will be inspected for sticky substances.
  • Single belt and sleeves are legal.
  • Odd ball note – no wrist wraps on this event.
  • Fire extinguishers will be on hand to soothe your forearms

Duck Walk to Mouser Block Carry

  • 60sec to complete the course. Fastest time wins
  • 50ft course for each implement. Carry the duck walk, run back, get the Mouser Block. One event with running won’t kill you. Probably.
  • If you do not finish, you will be credited with distance achieved on your respective unfinished implement
  • Duck Walk must only break the plane of the finish line. Mouser Block must cross the line entirely and be set on any side OTHER THAN face up or face down. This is to prevent yall from throwing the darn things and destroying the facility and likely murdering a staff member. Don’t toss ‘em.
  • Time stops when hands are removed from the Mouser Block is steadied on the ground and hands are removed.
  • Tossing a Block results in a ZERO for the event, even if you get lucky and it lands in a legal position.
  • Watch your feet for God’s sake.

Tug of War

  • 60 seconds
  • Exact tournament format for each division will be determined on game day, because I won’t be able to build the brackets until then. Generally classes with less than 4 people will be “round robin” and classes with four or more will be “single elimination with losers’ bracket”.
  • You may not wrap the rope around your body in any way. This includes your hands/arms.
  • Judge will be watching the center marking on the rope to break the plane of the finish marker on either side. When this occurs, or when any part of an athlete’s body touches the ground other than the feet, the match will be over.
  • You may only pull backwards. Lateral movements beyond what is incidental is not permitted.

General Rules/Usual Mouser Stuff

  • In the event of a tie in the final standings, 1st place finishes will decide the winner. If there is still a tie, then 2nd place finishes will be the determinant, and so on. If a tie cannot be broken this way, athletes will compete in a tie breaker.
  • Sportsmanship is expected and required. This is the greatest sport in the world, let’s keep it that way.
  • There will be a pre-event prayer. No one is expected to participate, so please do not feel obligated. All we ask is to be respectful of those that do or do not wish to participate.
  • This is a drug free contest. If you are juiced feel free to come cheer on your buddies but please do not bother to sign up. Don’t be surprised if I show up with a duffel bag full of drug testing kits!
  • If you have a question, please ask! I would rather take a minute to clarify something than to see someone have a poor showing due to a misunderstanding.
