Summer Raid Weekend 2020

July 11, 2020 @ 10:00 am - July 12, 2020 @ 6:00 pm

USA Powerlifting…… MAS Wrestling… the Viking Highlander … OR…

ALL OF THEM, for one GLORIOUS WEEKEND!

REGISTRATION FOR THE USA POWERLIFTING MEET HAS BEEN CAPPED!!

***Registration now closed for both days***

USA Powerlifting Summer Raid, (Sanction # WV-2020-01): Saturday, July 11th @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

The Viking Highlander (Strongman Corp membership required): Sunday, July 12th @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

MAS Wrestling: Sunday, July 12th around 4:00pm (takes place during Strongman).

“He who lives without discipline, dies without honor.” – Icelandic proverb

The first Viking Summer Raid was born just a few weeks after Viking Performance Training opened its doors, and the strongman challenge was engaged.

In the second year a second day was added- Day 1 became a Powerlifting contest, unsanctioned as a test of raw strength against the iron in squat, bench press, and deadlift.  Day 2 the Strongman contest returned, a Strongman Corp Level I testing strength in its raw form.

Now for Year 7, we continue the evolution of this now legendary competition:

Day 1’s powerlifting will be sanctioned by the largest federation in the country, USA Powerlifting!

Day 2 will once again become The Viking Highlander. With Highland Games and Highlander style events fading away in Appalachia as the old guard struggles to keep them alive, we have decided to pick up the torch and carry it to new heights with a Norse twist. So be ready to don your kilt, fly the banner of your clan, and hurl things skyward in honor of the ancient Celts!

Compete in one contest or the other- strive for all-time bests in weight moved, PRs in reps, contest placings among your class, or try the ancient throwing events for the 1st time.

Compete in both contests, two grueling days of maximal effort in barely more than 24 hours’ time… and you challenge yourself, testing resolve, grit, and prove to yourself that you have what it takes not just to finish, but to conquer, and LEAD, the Raids!

Max Mouser Block Press

  • WORLD RECORDS will be on the line, as will WV state and US national records
  • 60sec to produce a successful lift. You may push, pull, kick, scream, and dance all you want in that 60sec to produce a good lift. If that 60sec expires and you have not produced a good lift, you are out.
  • We will take openers during warmups. 3 attempts allowed to reach a top weight. You miss, you’re out.
  • Athlete must wait for down command.
  • To receive down command, knees must be locked; feet stationary, not staggered, and within shoulder width; hips extended; upright posture; elbows locked; implement must be motionless to demonstrate control. Pressing with a “layback” technique is fine, however posture must be upright at lockout to receive the down command.
  • Dropping the implement will result in a “no lift” call. Object must be controlled to the ground. This is not easy with a big rectangular block, but clear effort must be made to control the descent.
  • Sleeves, one belt, and wrist wraps are legal. No tacky (if that wasn’t obvious).
  • Mouser Block available at www.mouserpower.com/mouser-block/
  • “Chip rule” goes into effect to break all time world record once that weight is reached – so 350, 355, etc is allowed by anyone who successfully presses 320.

Weight for Distance

  • 30sec per throw. 3 throws allowed. Furthest throw counts toward final score
  • You may spin, hop, skip, jump, etc. during your throw.
  • Don’t step out of bounds. That will DQ your throw!
  • If you have no idea what this event is, 10 seconds on Google and/or YouTube will clear it up my friends. Please do this before asking. Loooove yooouuuu.

Inch DB Challenge

  • In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, strongmen would travel from city to city performing stage shows. Often these stage shows would feature “unliftable” dumbbells that the performers would challenge members of the audience to try to pick up. Perhaps the most famous of these was the Thomas Inch DB, which weighed 172 pounds and boasted a 2 & 3/8in handle thickness. The DB’s featured in this event will all be similar in handle thickness at 2.25in, except the 172, which is an actual certified Inch DB replica.
  • 2 DBs of different weights will be available for athletes to lift. Athlete must choose his/her bell to begin with and may not change that decision once the start signal is given.
  • Any lift of a heavier bell automatically places that athlete higher than anyone else who did not lift that heavier bell. For example, if Bob earns 10 points with 172 pound bell, & Steve earns 20 points with a 145 pound, BOB WINS. Be like Bob. Will you take the gamble and select the heavy bell???
  • Single hand deadlift is worth 1 point. Hand must be removed to finish each rep – wait for “up” command.
  • Single hand press/jerk is worth two points. Each rep may start from shoulder.
  • Single handed “ground to overhead” is worth ten points
  • Two hands must be used to return the bell to the ground. Dropping the bell or failing to control the bell will result in a “no lift” call.

Mas Wrestling

  • The original Viking sport!  Best described in its simplest form as Seated Tug of War with a stick, a MAS Wrestling tournament will be held among the weight classes.  This will be part of a separate MAS Wrestling tournament, increasing the possible number of matches!  All matches are 2 out of 3, and tournament style will be double-elimination or round robin, depending on the number of competitors.  For a full description of the rules, including links to sample videos, click here http://maswrestlingusa.com/mas-wrestling/abridged-mas-wrestling-usa-rules

Max Stone Over Bar (raw, no tacky)

  • WV state records on the line
  • Competitors will have 30sec per stone to lift said stone over a yoke bar
  • Bar height is 48 inch for everyone. Yes that means you. And him too. Yes her as well.
  • No sticky substances of any kind are permitted to be used on the body or clothes. Failure to adhere to this simple rule will result in disqualification from the event, and you’ll be thoroughly cleaning everything you touched while sticky.
  • Cannot grab the yoke bar to push stone over. Everybody wants to blab about safety but then whine when I try to keep you from losing a finger. Stop it. Don’t make me turn this car around.
  • We will take openers during warmups. 3 attempts allowed to reach a top weight. You miss, you’re out.
  • Sleeves, single belt, and wrist wraps are allowed, although wrist wraps are a terrible idea here. That’s a freebie. You’re welcome.
  • Did I mention no tacky, no tacky towels, no spray tack, no slathering yourself in snot, tree sap, or symbiotic space organisms? Cuz yeah, all that is illegal. Lift it like they did hundreds of years ago.
